I smiled when he sent me this email:
Ernestine Anderson: When the Sun Goes Down 1984
"
My father and all my father's family were from Ferrara, a nice old town in the core of Emilia, the region where Giuseppe Verdi came from, Toscanini, and many other great opera composers, and musical artists.
When I was a kid, at night, my aunt was playing cards, dad was typing on an old Olivetti Lettera 22 typing machine, my mather was knitting, me my sister and my cousin were playing, my grand mother was spleeping on a sofa, and no one could talk, since my uncle was listening close to the big old radio we had (mid fifties), listening to the opera.
Every single night for about 10 yrs in a row, every night the opera. At times, operetta.
I can sing along any opera 's aria, you start one, I'll go on. But, I can't tell which one it is, don't konw titles, etc"
It's a scene right out of a De Sica film! I can just imagine beautiful opera fills in the casa de Andrea.... except that he hardly listens to them. I guess we all have the *overdose* music and probably the same reaon, I would never listen to traditional Japanese music.
Andrea is very excited out his recent acquistion of a pair of late vintage Briks. ( note there is no DMS/PMS designation on the Linn logo ) They fit right at home in the modern family living room. Check out how he cleverly concealed all the Naim boxes out of sight.
Andrea comments:"...They are DMS/PMS convertible, and came with inbuilt xover, I mean inside the cabinet...this is in fact the second pair of briks I have, the first was DMS canon plugs, I had to sell them due to WAF disaster, after 1 month of ownership . . after I had serious trouble adapting back to my Kans . . . in my memory the DMS were sweeter, fuller may be more "musical" than those here. . . but it could just be a trick of memory . . . !?
My system is
LP12 vintage 1987, as Ittok LVII, bought the same year is one of rare black Ittok.
Cart is Klyde, I switched to it after my beloved Karma went retired.
The deck has a Circus, and a Prefix K type, powered by a recapped HiCap.
The power is given to deck by a Lingo 2.
That is it for the deck, ah yes, trampolin 1.
The TT stand is an Audiotech floor stand.
Underneath it there is the HC on a PS pico support.
The interesting thing is both pre and Scap, left and right size of my cabinet, rest on an heavy glass, held by 3 ball cup bearing FRaim originals, and below them there is a second glass, resting on the cabinet it self. Between glass and cabinet there are splitters, plastic type.
Amp is a 250, pre 82 with Supercap.
They all rest, along with Lingo, and headphone amp, on a stand custom made, metal style like Sound Org.
All inside is away from cabinet, in other words, there is no contact bw racks and cabinet, except for the glass holding 82 and Scap...
In the future, there are not immediate mods to make.
I know a Dyna could be nice, a Keel or similar too, a couple of 135, a second 250 and xover to go active, maybe a 52?
But it is not going to be for tomorrow, if ever,
The only thing that really makes me curious, is an active system ,never heard one, but my rack/cabinet has reached its maximum load, so no way for now...
I asked Andrea how they are compared to his long servicing Kans:
"The ensemble is more consistent, more detailed, more enjoyable all together.
Big news: I can now listen to classical music (beside chamber music I mean) like big orchestras, as for symphonies, concerts, and the like.
That is to say, I don't "miss" anything in the sound: it is just right.
I do not whish more and I don't whish less, of about anything! Oh yes, there is something . . . I whish I had more time to listen to music, now.
I've been spending evenings with TT spinning, for the first time since quite a long time . . . . (my evenings begin at 10 pm at times, and end at 12 pm or so . . . I wake up at 6:30 monday to friday, I tend to sleep much less nowadays, aging does that, but still I need to have some sleep) having the Briks here, and let them go, has been very demotivating toward my dear Kans "
System updates: December 2014
- NAP250 replaced with NAP 135 monos
- LP12 updated with Cirkus bearing
