Andy's system:

Amplifications: Naim Stageline-->Naim NAC202/FC2--> Naim NAP250 ( Olive inside, Reference case outside )

Andy is a brave soul who decided to give the Brik a shot changing over from a pair of Neat Motive 2. He drove 450 mile round trip ( boy, what a determination! ) and picked up a '81 vintage DMS ( like mine ). He's discovering many wonderful virtues the Briks offer.

He sums them up nicely: There is something very magical about the Briks and I guess they are a bit like Marmite -you either love ‘em or you hate ‘em.

Andy comments: "...I have been a long time Naim fan using the CD5, Michell Gyro SE, Stageline, 112, 150, FC2, NACA5 setup for a number of years. I also designed and built my own custom wooden “Fraim” to house everything as I just couldn’t bring myself to spend the extortionate sum for the real thing. All this was feeding a pair of Neat Motive 2 speakers that I had heard at the Bristol Show back in 2005 and had fallen in love with their detailed sound and seemingly impressive bass for such a small box.

However, I felt sure I was missing out on something and as I started to listen to more classical lp’s (Decca SXL’s are a particular favourite of mine) the Neats just weren’t up to creating the scale and impact that I craved.

The opportunity arose to purchase a pair of 1981 DMS Isobariks in good working order, but looking a bit tatty so I bit the bullet and drove a 450 mile round trip to collect them. I then spent some time restoring the cabinet finish and stands, making some new foam grilles, and giving them a good clean up (the top facing tweeters and mid range drivers were caked in dust and fluff!)

I hooked them up to my system and really wasn’t expecting to be very impressed. Driving a pair of 27 year old passive Briks with a humble NAP150 surely wasn’t going to be a recipe for musical heaven.
My God….. I was shocked at the results!!! The sound from these speakers is just spellbinding. My listening room isn’t particularly big (16’ x 12’) but being in the roof space it does have high ceilings (10’+). Perhaps this gives the Briks plenty of room to breath above them but they just seem to hook up effortlessly with the acoustic space and produce an absolutely amazing sound.

Compared to the Neat Motives I can honestly say that the Briks produce:

  • A much better defined and deeper soundstage
  • Vastly superior bass performance with no signs of wooliness
  • As good as if not better detail in the treble/mid range
  • A constant desire to listen to music at higher sound levels that seems to immerse you in the musical performance
  • A smile on my face every time I listen to them!

System updates:
09-August

    • 112/150 replaced by 202/250 ( '90 vintage )
